Donovan Robinson scored two rushing touchdowns, and Monterey Trail’s defense pitched a shutout in a 12-7 road win at Rodriguez last Friday.

Rodriguez’s lone touchdown came on a 20-yard fumble return in the first quarter.

Monterey Trail won its third in a row since dropping a 17-14 decision to Antelope in the season opener.

Robinson, the team’s starting quarterback, accounted for both touchdowns and was the third leading rusher.

He scored on a 10-yard run in the first quarter to tie the game at 6 after a missed extra point.

Robinson then scored the eventual game-winning touchdown in the third quarter on a 34-yard run. The two-point attempt also failed.

Rodriguez had a chance late in the game for a potential go-ahead score, but a pass into the end zone was intercepted with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter.

Monterey Trail forced five turnovers and had two sacks.

Sophomore Andre Flury had two interceptions and junior Jahmar Sexton had one.

Adrian Tellez and Marlon Ward each had a fumble recovery.

Offensively, Monterey Trail ran for 330 yards.

Four different rushers had at least 12 carries and 64 or more yards.

Elijah McGolthin ran for a team-high 92 yards on 18 carries. Sterling Powell carried 16 times for 86 yards, Robinson had 12 carries for 81 yards and Trey Nahhas had 64 yards on 13 carries.

Monterey Trail, now 3-1 overall, concludes nonconference on Friday with a trip to Woodland to face Pioneer.

The Delta Valley Conference schedule begins Oct. 5 for Monterey Trail with a home game against Davis, which wrapped up its nonconference slate at 3-2 after a 40-0 rout of Woodland last Friday.

Sacramento 42, Florin 2

Sacramento scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters and coasted to a road win at Florin in the Metro Conference opener for both teams.

Sac High extended its winning streak to three straight since losing the season opener.

Quarterback Josiah Johnson, one of the top dual threats in the Sac-Joaquin Section, accounted for 402 yards of offense, with 379 and four touchdowns through the air.

Louis MacKlin caught five passes for 150 yards and one touchdown, and Dale Lewis had four receptions for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Lonny Powell’s only catch resulted in a 95-yard touchdown. He also had a rushing touchdown.

Florin was limited to just 129 yards of total offense.

Demetrius Hartsfield ran for a team-high 41 yards on nine carries. Ben Walls had six carries for 36 yards.

The Panthers passed for only 15 yards, but avoided a shutout with a safety in the third quarter.

Florin is 0-4 under first-year coach Mike Rosales and has given up the second-most points (172) of all eight Metro Conference teams.

Only Kennedy (175) has allowed more than Florin.

The Panthers will be at home again on Friday, this time against one-win Hiram Johnson.

McClatchy 7, Valley 6

Valley scored its first points of the season, but it wasn’t enough for their first win. A missed extra point cost the Vikings a shot at opening the Metro Conference at 1-0.

Instead they dropped their fourth straight.

McClatchy, which had scored just 21 points through its three losses, snatched its first win of the season. It was the first home game for McClatchy, which plays at Sacramento City College.

They will be home on Friday as well against Kennedy.

Valley is on the road for a second straight week with a trip to Rosemont on Friday.
